How SEO and Website Accessibility Efforts Are Related

SEO, which stands for “search engine optimization” is the practice of increasing the quality and quantity of website traffic through non-paid, organic search engine results. By non-paid we mean you don’t pay Google directly to bump your website to the top of website searches like in Pay Per Click marketing.

Website Accessibility, also known as A11Y, (there are 11 letters between the A and Y) is making your website accessible to the visually impaired and others with disabilities by adhering to the WCAG 2.1 rules and section 502 of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

How are SEO and Accessibility compliance related? Part of SEO and Accessibility efforts involve systematically labeling everything on the front-end and back-end of a website.

In the case of SEO, a website gets labeled and optimized so Google can crawl the site then deliver its URL to those searching for that content. In the case of Accessibility, all website elements get labeled so adaptive screen reader technology can “speak” a website’s content to the visually impaired.

For SEO and Accessibility efforts, one hand washes the other, and everyone is happy.
